Antique Swirl Molded Fiery Opalescent Milk Glass Wafer Tray / Mini Compote 1840
For sale is this fine pressed glass wafer tray / miniature compote in fiery opalescent flint milk glass. This looks like a toy, but I think it is a wafer tray. Before envelopes came into common use after the Civil War, letters were sealed with gummed wafers. It was common to have a small tray on your desk to hold them. When you hold it up to the light, you can see the fiery orange color around the rim. Circa 1840 - 1860.
The wafer tray is 2 3/8 inches wide by 1 3/4 inches tall. It weighs 2.5 oz (shipping weight under 1 lb).
Condition: Excellent, no chips or cracks. The usual bubbles and swirls of early glass production.
