Antique Elsmore Forster Harlequin Columbine Enameled Loving Cup Mug 19th Century
Very unusual enameled Staffordshire transferware loving cup mug by Elsmore and Forster (1853 - 1871) of Tunstall, Staffordshire in the "Harlequin and Columbine" pattern, inspired by the characters of the Comedia dell'Arte. One side has Harlequin, Columbine and other Commedia dell'Arte characters. The other side has two levels of clowns and other performers. Gold trim on rim, base and handles. No's maker's mark but a number 3. It dates to circa 1860. This is a rare form of decoration for Staffordshire transferware.
The loving cup is 4 3/4 inches tall by 5 inches wide.
